With the change of President approaching, change in currency is also. Some might say this is racist and perhaps it is. No offence intended, just for fun!

An open proxy is a proxy server which is accessible by any Internet user. Generally, a proxy server allows users within a network group to store and forward internet services such as DNS or web pages so that the bandwidth used by the group is reduced and controlled. With an “open” proxy, however, any user on the Internet is able to use this forwarding service. Most of the time the owner of the proxy server doesn’t know that he/she is running an “open” proxy because of the proxy software misconfiguration. I still remember that the first IT company that I worked in 10 years ago had a Microsoft Proxy server in the network and it is an open proxy.
Open proxy is most commonly used to mask the user’s IP address. It could be to bypass censorship, privacy, or even to avoid detection. To be able to use the open proxy, a software such as Internet Explorer must support using proxy server. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN settings. Check “Use a proxy server for your LAN” and enter the proxy IP address and port. Now when you surf the web, the site can’t see your original IP address. Check out the animation below. I visit www.cmyip.com to view my original IP address. Then I configure Internet Explorer to use an open proxy. Refreshing www.cmyip.com website shows the open proxy instead of my original IP.

Sharing one keyboard and mouse on multiple computers makes sense. Many of us have more than 1 computers but don’t want too many mess cables around or multiple mouses and keyboards that can confuse us. That’s why there are free software such as Input Director and Synergy that allows you to easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware.
Well what about installing multiple mouse and keyboard on one computer? I’ve tried installing 2 mouse on my laptop and it doesn’t make a difference because both mouse shares the same cursor. However, when doing presentation or brainstorming on one computer with a few people, having multiple mouse and keyboard really helps. Check out the flash animation below and you’ll get the idea.

As far as I know, BitDefender Antivirus is very sensitive and can detect a lot of viruses including those that are not really a virus (false positive). I once installed BitDefender on my computer and a lot of my non-virus files (cracks and keygens) were automatically deleted. Even the ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 keygenerator by SnD which I downloaded earlier was detected as trojan.generic.912879 and automatically deleted!
The first thing you should do after installing BitDefender is to configure the action should it take when detect a threat because automatically deleting a file by default without a user’s consent is a bad move. Believe it or not, I immediately uninstalled BitDefender Antivirus and never use it again. Don’t get me wrong. BitDefender is good but it’s not suitable for people like me who are constantly downloading and testing “stuff”. It is more suitable for basic computer user that just wants to keep the computer clean from viruses.
Looks like this week is full of freebies. ZoneAlarm Pro 2009, NOD32 Antivirus, and now free BitDefender Antivirus 2009 license that is valid for a year. The latest BitDefender Antivirus 2009 normally cost $24.95 for a year but it will be totally free if you follow the steps which I am about to show you.

These patches/hotfixes are obtained in a variety of ways such as visiting the Windows Update or Microsoft Update website (accessible from your START button), through the Automatic Update service which runs in the background on your PC and weekly checks for recently issued updates/patches/hotfixes or by System Administrators downloading and applying patches and hotfixes to your PC. Have you ever encountered a computer that is so badly infected by spyware and virus that the computer is so slow and you could hardly do anything on it? Fully booting in to computer takes like 15 minutes, then to install an on-demand antivirus program takes another 30 minutes and then to update the signatures takes another hour. Running a full scan would definitely take more than an hour. The computer should be cleaned from virus IF the on-demand antivirus is able to detect and remove the virus from computer. If not, you have to spend a few more hours hoping that the next on-demand antivirus that you’re going to install can detect the virus that’s causing the slowdown.
I used to go through all that but I no longer do that now. Whenever the computer is too slow to fix, I’d just pop in an antivirus rescue disk which is able to scan the computer for virus even without booting in to Windows. It is faster and more effective since the virus is not active when Windows is not running. I’ve already introduced 4 brands of free rescue CD which is Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Avira AntiVir Rescue System, F-Secure Rescue CD and BitDefender 2008 RescueCD. Here is yet another free antivirus rescue disk from Dr. Web called Dr.Web LiveCD which is very useful to scan and remove virus when the computer is very badly infected by virus.
BitDefender Rescue CD is similar to Kaspersky and Avira’s one. You’ll have to download the ISO image (bitdefender_2008_RescueCD_v2.iso) and burn it to a CD or DVD. Then boot up the computer with the disc and you’ll get a screen that looks like the image below.
