Microsoft regularly makes available critical Windows XP and Windows 2000 security patches (or hotfixes as they are also called) which ensure that your operating system keeps up to date. These patches/hotfixes are obtained in a variety of ways such as visiting the Windows Update or Microsoft Update website (accessible from your START button), through the Automatic Update service which runs in the background on your PC and weekly checks for recently issued updates/patches/hotfixes or by System Administrators downloading and applying patches and hotfixes to your PC.

FREE Dr.Web LiveCD To Scan and Remove Virus Without Starting Windows

Have you ever encountered a computer that is so badly infected by spyware and virus that the computer is so slow and you could hardly do anything on it? Fully booting in to computer takes like 15 minutes, then to install an on-demand antivirus program takes another 30 minutes and then to update the signatures takes another hour. Running a full scan would definitely take more than an hour. The computer should be cleaned from virus IF the on-demand antivirus is able to detect and remove the virus from computer. If not, you have to spend a few more hours hoping that the next on-demand antivirus that you’re going to install can detect the virus that’s causing the slowdown.

I used to go through all that but I no longer do that now. Whenever the computer is too slow to fix, I’d just pop in an antivirus rescue disk which is able to scan the computer for virus even without booting in to Windows. It is faster and more effective since the virus is not active when Windows is not running. I’ve already introduced 4 brands of free rescue CD which is Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Avira AntiVir Rescue System, F-Secure Rescue CD and BitDefender 2008 RescueCD. Here is yet another free antivirus rescue disk from Dr. Web called Dr.Web LiveCD which is very useful to scan and remove virus when the computer is very badly infected by virus.

FREE F-Secure Rescue CD 3.00 to Clean Virus from Unbootable Windows

Previously I’ve introduced a total of 3 free rescue CDs provided by Kaspersky, Avira and BitDefender. In my opinion, Kaspersky is very well known for its detection rate but it is not updated regularly and can’t auto update. As for Avira, it is also pretty good in detecting both known and unknown virus. Although Avira Rescue CD is updated several times a day, we can’t possibly burn the ISO into a CD each time it is updated because we’ll wasting CDs. As for BitDefender Rescue CD, it has a very sensitive detection rate and is able to automatically update the virus definition and saving it to RAM disk. Each rescue disk has its own pros and cons. Here’s another Rescue CD recommended by leofelix. Last month, F-Secure released a new major update on their free Rescue CD. It was one and a half year ago since their last update version 2.00. If you don’t know what is a Rescue CD, it is a CD that you can boot up the computer with and can run an antivirus program even without a working or bootable Windows. Rescue CD are best used when your computer no longer starts because the operating system has been corrupted by malware and you can use Rescue CD to scan the computer and quarantine the malware. This may allow the operating system to start properly again.

Kaspersky Offers FREE Rescue Disk To Clean Virus Without Booting in Windows

Some virus are very destructive or badly coded until it affects Windows stability. One of the worst thing that could happen is you’re unable to boot in to Windows and not even Safe Mode. That makes it harder for tech people to troubleshoot the problem and ended up in reformatting the hard drive to reinstall Windows. Last year I written a guide on how to clean or remove virus when you can’t boot in to Windows using Hiren’s BootCD.

However, Hiren’s BootCD only has F-Prot and McAfee dos based antivirus, which I personally think that it is not strong or smart enough to detect and remove some viruses. The only antivirus program that I can put my trust on is Kaspersky.

Good news is Kaspersky has started offering Rescue Disk to scan and remove virus on computer without the need of booting in to Windows. [...]

web2ftp a online FTP Client Software, run ftp in Browser

Two years ago when I was working in a government education facility where FTP port 21 was blocked and I couldn’t upload images to my blog. I had to find a way to do it and I found web based FTP called Web2FTP works flawless because it uses port 80 which most firewalls allow but the only con is you have to trust that the website will not record or keep your FTP login details. Basically the Web2FTP acts like a middle man. Whatever I upload to Web2FTP, it will upload to my FTP server and whatever I download, it will download from my FTP server and then send it to me when it has finished receiving the file. [...]

Vista UAC Security Feature in Windows XP with suDown

User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security infrastructure introduced with Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. It aims to improve the security of Microsoft Windows by limiting application software to standard user privileges until an administrator authorizes an increase in privilege level. In this way, only applications that the user trusts receive higher privileges, and malware should be kept from receiving the privileges necessary to compromise the operating system. By default the user in Vista is still an administrator but it runs in a low privileged environment and you can elevate your rights only when necessary. [...]
