The first thing you should do after installing BitDefender is to configure the action should it take when detect a threat because automatically deleting a file by default without a user’s consent is a bad move. Believe it or not, I immediately uninstalled BitDefender Antivirus and never use it again. Don’t get me wrong. BitDefender is good but it’s not suitable for people like me who are constantly downloading and testing “stuff”. It is more suitable for basic computer user that just wants to keep the computer clean from viruses.

Looks like this week is full of freebies. ZoneAlarm Pro 2009, NOD32 Antivirus, and now free BitDefender Antivirus 2009 license that is valid for a year. The latest BitDefender Antivirus 2009 normally cost $24.95 for a year but it will be totally free if you follow the steps which I am about to show you.

BitDefender Antivirus 2009 provides advanced proactive protection against viruses, spyware, phishing attacks and identity theft, without slowing down your PC. The latest version of BitDefender 2009 has improved scanning of web e-mail and instant messaging traffic for viruses and spyware, in real-time. It also has new features such as instant messaging encryption and laptop mode which prolongs the laptop battery life.

BitDefender is also well known for it’s lightness in system resource usage. livesrv.exe takes up 4200Kb, bdagent.exe talks up 1356Kb and vsserv.exe takes up 2680Kb. BitDefender only takes up a total of 8MB off your memory! BitDefender Antivirus 2009 works on Windows XP SP2(32/64 bit), Vista(32/64 bit) and Home Server.

BitDefender products are way too easy for crackers to crack. Normally there is a keygenerator that generates license key for BitDefender products and then patches the HOSTS file to block BitDefender from calling home to check whether the key is legit or not. As for the latest BitDefender 2009, there is a patch that automatically registers BitDefender to work until year 2049.

I don’t have much experience with ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 but I’ve installed on my desktop computer to test it out. So if you already have an antivirus software + ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 installed on XP, I’d advice you to have at least 1GB of physical RAM on your computer. For Vista, 2GB is the best. Well most of the modern computer nowadays comes with 2GB of RAM already.

Although ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 only has firewall and spyware protection, but it managed to detect a suspicious behavior when I tried infecting my computer with an undetectable private trojan.

I found a keygenerator for ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 by Team SnD ZoneAlarm.Pro.8.0.WinAll.Incl.keygen-SND which generates pirated license keys. Basically the keys generated by the keygen is to extend the trial period to 15825 days. That is nearly 43 years! Everything works the same except you’ll get a popup nag screen thanking you for evaluating ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 whenever the computer starts up.

F-Secure Rescue CD 3.00 will by default scan all hard drives in the computer, all USB drives attached to the computer, Windows FAT and NTFS filesystems. F-Secure Rescue CD ISO file is 155MB in size and you’ll need to burn the ISO to a CD. Boot up the computer with the CD and you’ll see a screen that looks like the image below. You have 15 seconds to press ENTER to start the CD or it will boot normally via hard drive.

Once the ENTER key is pressed, it will start uncompressing Linux and boot the kernel. Please make sure that you have access to the Internet. Either plug in your network cable or make sure you have wireless enabled. Once F-Secure Rescue CD is loaded, select Next and hit the ENTER key. It will automatically start updating virus definition database. I have a 1Mbps connection and it took less than 3 minutes to update. Click Next to agree the end user license agreement. At the next screen you get to select what to scan. To select or deselect an item on the list, use the space key and select Start Scan. While the scan is ongoing, you can hit Alt+F5 key to see details of files being scanned, Alt+F6 to see any malware found and Ctrl+C to cancel scanning.

F-Secure Rescue CD scans the computer and renames all files containing malware to .virus file extension. Using Rescue CD on a working operating system may rename essential system files and so cause your operating system to no longer start. If this happens you can use your operating system repair disk to reinstall the operating system. Note that this may reinstall a fresh operating system and so remove any personal settings and files you have. If your computer is working fine after the scan, simple do a search on all *.virus file and delete it.

Rescue CD cannot scan encrypted disks. This includes for example, Windows Vista BitLocker disk encryption.

If you do not have an internet connection, can download Rescue CD virus definition updates to a USB drive using a healthy computer. This USB drive must be empty and 256mb or greater in size. Just download fsdbupdate.run file (40MB) and save it to the root directory of the USB drive. Insert the USB flash drive to the infected computer, boot up using F-Secure Rescue CD and follow the instructions.

Here is a few simple test I conducted with Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. I ran a full system scan and it took only few minutes to finish scanning 50000 targets/files. Pretty impressive but one thing I don’t like about Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 is it takes up as much as 60MB in memory usage. During scanning, the memory usage can go up to 80MB.

There are a lot of keygenerators and cracks for Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 but none at all for Trend Internet Security 2009. Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 works on Windows 2000, XP,and Vista (32/64bit). Actually I got to know about this offer much ealier but didn’t want to immediately post it on this blog because the license supposed to last until December 4th 2008. So I thought maybe by December 5th, HTC Broadband will give a new serial number that can be used on the latest Trend Micro Internet Security 2009 v17. Unfortunately that is not happening because the serial number expiration date has been extended to September 29th 2011! I’ve tried my best to find a way for free upgrade but that wasn’t possible too.
